The Towns
The towns of French Lick and West Baden grew alongside the hotels. The tiny towns bumped right up against each other, as they do today. A trolley made the one mile run between the two town centers starting in 1903.
As the Springs Valley’s popularity as a destination grew, other hotels and entertainment venues arose… including illegal gambling dens. More about that later.
Postcard of the Claxton Hotel, one of 25 smaller hotels in the valley catering to persons of more modest means.
